Edward Hopper, The House by the Railroad (1925)

Unity

My Lord, exclaimed a desperate soul,
One day all things will form a whole
In which I play a vital role…

But none of this came ever true;
The earth was rock, the ocean glue,
The swallow twitt’ring, and the heaven blue.

The breezy call of incense-breathing Morn,
The swallow twitt’ring from the straw-built shed,
The cock’s shrill clarion, or the echoing horn,
No more shall rouse them from their lowly bed.
